Colorado’s U.S. Navy Seabee License Plate

Effective 01January2024, the State of Colorado (per Senate Bill 23-212) is offering "U.S. Navy Seabees" license plates to individuals who served in the Naval Construction Forces.

About: Creation of this license plate was per Senate Bill 23-212.

Available For: Motorcycles, Passenger cars, trucks that do not exceed 16,000 pounds empty weight, or a noncommercial or recreational vehicles and motor homes unless otherwise specified (not available for any vehicle registered as Tax Class A – International Registration Plan (IRP)).

Who Qualifies: Honorably Discharged Veteran, Retired, Active, or Reserve Members of a Construction Battalion of the United States Navy (including women veterans, and discharge LGBT veterans).

Requirements: Qualifying person must submit a copy of form DD214 (issued by the U.S. Government) or military orders that demonstrate they are or were members of a Construction Battalion of the United States Navy. (For the PWD versions of these plates, the DR 2219 will be required as detailed in CRS 42-3-204.

Fees: One set of plates is exempt from fees allowed by CRS 43-3-213(1)(b)(II)(D). A second or additional set requires a one-time fee of $50.00 for issuance or replacement of plates, in addition to other taxes and fees.

Personalized License Plate Fees: Not allowed.

Number of Plates Allowed: Unlimited, only the first set is exempt from fees.

Step 1: Go to Colorado Department of Revenue Licenses https://dmv.colorado.gov/license-plates-military

Step 2: Click on "U.S. Navy Seabees".

Step 3: Complete "Military License Plate Application" (Form DR 2002) on-line or print out and complete.

Step 4: Make an appointment with the County Clerk where the vehicle is registered in the State of Colorado.

Step 5: Documentation options to bring to the County Clerk (copies or originals):

* DD214 (If you have one or if you were in the Reserve Component/Reservist, you may need to explain that Reservists do not have this documentation and substitute from the list below).

* Honorable Discharge Paperwork that shows your rate (if enlisted) or CEC Officers documentation.

* Official Military Correspondence or Citation letter.

* SCWS (Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist) Certificate.

* Navy Personnel Command Retirement Order listing Rate/Rank (if enlisted) or CEC Officers documentation.

Key points or lessons learned are: 1. *The first set of plates is FREE (of fees, not taxes)* for a motorcycle, passenger car or trucks that do not exceed 16,000 pounds empty weight, noncommercial or recreational vehicles and motor homes (not available for any vehicle registered as Tax Class A – International Registration Plan (IRP))! 2. The second set or subsequent sets of plates have a one-time fee of $50 (plus any taxes). 3. Be patient with the clerk on the otherside of the station or counter (they likely have not encountered these plates previous to yourself). 4. Be Prepared to Surrender your plates, if you are replacing an Active in-service set (or they may allow you to keep one or both to place above your bar, love me wall or add to the retired plates in your garage.) 5. You will be given a 60 day Temporary Tag and registration, to allow them to send the plates to your mailing address on your motor vehicle record. 6. Ensure that you have proof of insurance, proof of passing emissions and your proof of ownership for the appointment.
